What We're About
Artistic Statement of Director, Corinne Shearer
Under the choreographic direction of Corinne Shearer, this group of like-minded artists tease apart the banal moments of life as well as the extraordinary, believing the crux of the human experience to be somewhere in between. The work often features live text and props to help shape the vivid yet non-linear stories told. The movement itself gives equal value to the pedestrian and the virtuosic, ranging from the athletic and sweeping, to the detailed and sensitive. This friction creates a common language with the devised material made in collaboration with the dancers. Always pervasive in the work is humor, irony, and bittersweet poignancy. The work is often collaborative across mediums, with the belief that cross-disciplinary conversations are not only mutually enriching, but imperative to developing a landscape on which both audiences and artists can meet. To this end, Corinne Shearer and Dancers is also proud to host “Spitball,” a performance series dedicated to providing an inclusive space for artists of all mediums to share works-in-progress.
Corinne Shearer and Dancers seeks to connect and empower people of all identifications. The work uses movement to conjure memory, empathy and self-awareness in service of issues of discrimination, climate change, and social injustice. This is achieved through active questioning within the work and process, and imaginative teaching practices that range from early childhood exploration through to beginning adults and dance professionals.
Corinne Shearer has produced two evening length works (Enlarged to Show Texture, Triskelion Arts 2018 and OTHERLANDS, Gibney POP Showing 2019.) In addition to these longer works, the group has presented original material for the stage and film both locally and internationally at notable venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn, as well as at The University of East London Stratford and the Short+Sweet Festival in Los Angeles. Shearer has been featured as an artist-in-residence at The Triple Nine Festival in Gowanus, and was selected as a guest choreographer for the 2019 Film Season of One Day Dance. Most recently, Corinne Shearer and Dancers was invited to perform an immersive piece as part of a new music and arts festival in at The Baumann in Brooklyn, NY.
